Nigeria stands today at a critical crossroads where the integrity of its judiciary and the protection of fundamental human rights, especially those of women, are being tested under the harshest spotlight. At the center of this defining moment is Senator Natasha Akpoti, whose courage to speak out about alleged sexual harassment by the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, has now made her the target of criminal charges. What should have been a moment for truth, accountability, and reform has instead become a shameful display of victim-blaming and institutionalized intimidation.
A Case Beyond the Individual: A National Reckoning
Senator Akpoti’s ordeal is not just her own; it is the echo of thousands of Nigerian women who face harassment, threats, and social exile for daring to speak against abuse especially when the accused are powerful political figures. Rather than investigating the allegations thoroughly and protecting the complainant, we are witnessing a grotesque inversion of justice. The very institutions tasked with upholding the law appear to have become tools of suppression.
The filing of criminal charges against Senator Akpoti, rather than a transparent inquiry into her claims, is indicative of a justice system increasingly manipulated by political interest. It is not only a betrayal of a courageous woman’s voice but a clear signal to others that silence is safer than truth.
The Judiciary: Guardian or Pawn of Power?
The Nigerian judiciary has historically been perceived as the last hope of the common citizen. Yet, its recent handling of high-profile cases and now, its apparent inertia in the face of this blatant abuse calls that reputation into question. The judiciary must rise above political manipulation. It must safeguard its integrity by ensuring that Senator Akpoti’s case is treated with impartiality, urgency, and respect for the rule of law.
If the courts succumb to pressure, they will not only destroy the credibility of this specific case but will also reaffirm a culture of impunity. Justice must not only be done; it must be seen to be done. Only through bold, transparent action can the judiciary restore public faith.
The Larger Crisis: Gender-Based Violence in Nigeria
The issue is larger than one case. Nigeria faces a silent pandemic of sexual harassment and gender-based violence. In every corner of the country, women who report abuse are more likely to be shamed, silenced, or even prosecuted than to see their abusers held accountable.
Senator Akpoti’s case has brought to light this dangerous trend where instead of creating space for justice, society and state institutions suffocate the voices of victims. We cannot afford this cycle of silence. It weakens our democracy, undermines the legal system, and endangers every woman who dares to stand for her rights.
The Deafening Silence: A Shameful Indictment
Even more troubling is the silence from the highest offices and influential voices in Nigeria. Where is the President of the Federal Republic, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, in this critical matter? Why has the opposition party, to which Senator Akpoti belongs, not risen in her defense? Have our royal fathers and political elders also lost their voices in the face of power?
The deliberate quietude from national leadership, political peers, and traditional institutions is not just disappointing and it is damning. This is not merely about politics; it is about justice, human dignity, and the safety of Nigerian women in public service.
Our Stand: For Justice, Not Just Gender
The Niger-Delta Women Coalition Europe, with headquarters in the Republic of Ireland, can no longer be passive. Our advocacy is not merely in support of a woman, it is in defense of truth and justice. We demand a fair hearing for Senator Natasha Akpoti. We call for the immediate suspension of all retaliatory legal actions until her allegations are thoroughly and impartially investigated.
If the Nigerian Judiciary, under the leadership of the Chief Justice of the Federation, fails to uphold its duty, we shall not hesitate to engage with appropriate authorities in our countries of residence. We are prepared to escalate this matter through international legal and human rights channels, if justice continues to be denied in Nigeria.
A Defining Moment for Nigeria
This is not only Senator Akpoti’s fight, it is Nigeria’s defining test. Will we allow our justice system to be weaponized against the vulnerable, or will we summon the courage to protect those who dare to challenge abuse and impunity?
The world is watching. The Nigerian judiciary stands under scrutiny. Now is the time to restore credibility, uphold dignity, and remind the nation and the world that justice still has a home in Nigeria.
