Press Release: Lennox Egavoja Gold

The violent and reprehensible acts witnessed in Edo State during the defection of Akpata to the African Democratic Congress are a chilling reminder of the fragile state of our democracy. The reported attempts and threats against respected national figures such as Peter Obi and John Odigie Oyegun represent not only an attack on individuals, but an assault on democratic values and civil order.

That such brazen acts including sporadic shootings and open displays of violence could occur in a civic space meant for political engagement is deeply troubling. Politics must never become a battleground of intimidation, fear, and bloodshed. Targeting citizens on the basis of political affiliation is a dangerous path that threatens the very foundation of our republic.

John Odigie Oyegun, a statesman with paternal roots in Edo and maternal ties to the Agbarha Warri Kingdom, symbolizes decades of service and national contribution. Any attempt to dishonor his legacy or endanger his life is an affront to the cultural dignity of the Agbarha Warri Kingdom and to all Nigerians who believe in democratic pluralism.

Let it be clearly stated: no political ambition, grievance, or ideology justifies barbarity. Violence is not activism; intimidation is not leadership.

To the perpetrators, we send an unequivocal message such lawlessness will neither silence the will of the people nor derail the march toward democratic consolidation.

To those entrusted with authority and security, we urge immediate and decisive action. The people of Nigeria deserve protection, accountability, and justice. Failure to act firmly only emboldens forces that seek to undermine democratic stability.

The good people of Edo State will not be intimidated. Nigeria must not normalize political terror. Our path forward must be anchored in dialogue, tolerance, and peaceful coexistence.

Democracy thrives not through fear, but through courage, participation, and respect for divergent views.

We condemn these acts in the strongest possible terms and call for an immediate end to all forms of political violence and intimidation across our nation.

Signed:

Lennox Egavoja Gold Former Deputy Chairman, African Democratic Congress, Delta State
