Ndokwa East, Delta State 19:05:2025
In a compelling address during a rural women’s empowerment gathering in Ndokwa East, Delta State, Prof. Adaobi P. Ugbomeh Secretary General of the Apex Association of Anioma Indigenes Inc., immediate past Women Leader and current Treasurer of PANDEF Delta State Chapter issued a strong condemnation of Female Genital Mutilation (FGM), describing it as a “barbaric and dehumanizing practice that must be eradicated.”
Speaking with unwavering conviction, Prof. Ugbomeh stated:
“FGM is a cruel violation of human dignity and must be outlawed in every community. It is unacceptable that such an inhumane tradition persists in our society. Perpetrators must face the full weight of the law.”
Despite being banned in several Nigerian states, FGM remains prevalent especially in rural communities—posing serious health risks, violating the human rights of young girls, and reinforcing harmful gender inequalities.
The Devastating Impact of FGM Includes:
- Severe medical complications including infections, chronic pain, and infertility
- Long-term emotional trauma, anxiety, and depression
- Increased risks during childbirth
- Lasting damage to self-esteem, identity, and human rights
Prof. Ugbomeh attributed the persistence of FGM to several deeply rooted cultural and social factors:
- Cultural Norms: FGM is still viewed as a traditional rite of passage in many communities.
- Misconceptions of Purity: Some believe it ensures modesty and enhances marriage prospects.
- Lack of Awareness: Limited access to education on the dangers of FGM enables its continuation.
- Social Pressure: Fear of community ostracism often forces compliance.
Call to Action
Prof. Ugbomeh issued a passionate appeal to all stakeholders:
- Government Agencies: Strengthen legal frameworks and enforce existing anti-FGM laws.
- Community Leaders: Champion awareness campaigns to challenge cultural misconceptions.
- Healthcare Providers: Offer compassionate care to survivors and advocate against the practice.
- Women and Mothers: Speak out, educate others, and protect the next generation of girls.
“Our daughters deserve a future free from pain, fear, and discrimination. We must promote education, empowerment, and equality for all. Let us unite and say: enough is enough. End FGM Now.” Join the Movement. End FGM in Nigeria.
