Edo State has lost one of its most formidable political figures, Chief Daniel Osi Orbih—a strategist, courageous political leader and influential voice whose impact extended far beyond party lines.
Chief Orbih, a former Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party in Edo State and former National Vice-Chairman of the party in the South-South, passed away on 31 August 2026 at the age of 64. His death has drawn tributes from political leaders and associates across Nigeria. (The Guardian)
Yet behind the commanding public figure was a brother, husband, father and cherished member of a close-knit family.
Speaking to Richlist International, a subsidiary publication of Cerutti Media, Prof. Charles Orbih—a US-based intellectual and technocrat—offered an emotional tribute to his late brother.
“My brother, Chief Dan, was more than a political giant. To the world, he was a political gladiator—a master tactician and strategist who never shied away from difficult political battles.
“I would often ask him, ‘How are you able to navigate the complexities of Nigerian politics?’ In his usual calm manner—a trademark of the Orbih family—he would explain his position without anger or bitterness.
“He successfully led the PDP to victory in Edo State during two presidential elections, despite the state being governed by the APC during those election cycles.”
Those words illuminate a defining quality of Chief Orbih’s political life: his ability to combine firmness with composure. He understood the difficult terrain of Nigerian politics, but he rarely allowed its turbulence to rob him of his calm disposition or strategic clarity.
Beyond the Political Battlefield
For the Orbih family, however, Dan was never defined solely by elections, party contests or political victories.
“Dan was—and will always remain—our blood and our brother,” Prof. Orbih said. “There was no political philosophy in our brotherhood.”
It is a simple but profound declaration. Beyond the headlines, campaign platforms and political confrontations stood a man deeply connected to his family and heritage. Political differences could never outweigh the enduring bonds of blood, loyalty and brotherhood.
Prof. Orbih recalled a brother whose quiet strength, measured wisdom and calm temperament reflected the values of the Orbih family. These personal qualities—less visible to the public—will remain among the family’s most treasured memories.
The Struggle Must Continue
Although Chief Orbih’s passing has created a painful void, his family believes that the causes he championed must not die with him.
“Our brother has fallen, but we shall continue the struggle for justice and equity without fear, knowing that he would want us to carry on. Sleep on, brother, until we meet again.”
Chief Dan Orbih’s departure represents a profound loss to the Orbih family, the people of Edo State and Nigeria’s political community. He will be remembered as a courageous leader, disciplined strategist and master of political mobilisation who confronted challenges without surrendering his characteristic calmness.
Death may have silenced his voice, but it cannot erase the footprints he left behind.
May God comfort his wife, children, siblings, extended family, political associates and all those touched by his life. May the soul of Chief Daniel Osi Orbih rest in perfect peace, and may his legacy of courage, justice, strategic leadership and steadfast service continue to inspire generations.
