In a heartfelt tribute that echoes across the global Nigerian Diaspora, Hon. Kenneth Chibuogwu Gbandi, former President of Nigerians in Diaspora Organisation (NIDO) Germany, former Continental Chairman of NIDO Europe, and one of the longest-serving champions of Diaspora socio-economic and cultural advancement has congratulated seven-time Olympian Olufunke Oshonaike on her historic appointment to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Athletes’ Commission.
Addressing Oshonaike as “our indefatigable Diaspora pride,” Hon. Gbandi celebrated her nomination by IOC President Kirsty Coventry, describing it as both a personal triumph and a powerful affirmation of the resilience, excellence, and global stature of Nigerians in the Diaspora.
Gbandi noted that having spent decades in Diaspora advocacy, from Germany to the wider European front, he has followed Oshonaike’s journey “with admiration and a sense of kinship.” He highlighted her long-standing support for the Diaspora community and recalled the numerous honours she has earned over the years, including the African Diaspora Living Legend Award (Germany), The Voice Achievers Award (The Netherlands), and the NIDO Germany Sports Personality Award, among others.
A Historic First for Nigeria
Oshonaike’s appointment marks the first time a Nigerian has been selected for this prestigious IOC body, an accomplishment Gbandi described as “worthy of national celebration and Diaspora pride.” For many in Germany and across Europe, he emphasized, the honour carries an even deeper resonance. Beyond her stellar sports career, Oshonaike has been “a consistent supporter of the Diaspora movement, an active member of our community, and an ambassador of Nigerian excellence on the world stage.”
Her extraordinary record of seven consecutive Olympic appearances, spanning Atlanta 1996 to Tokyo 2020, already secured her place in continental sports history. Her new role on the IOC Athletes’ Commission, ahead of the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Games, further establishes her as a continental trailblazer.

Quoting Oshonaike’s own reflection, “It has been my dream to impact the sport that gave me the rare opportunity to live well in life”, Gbandi said her words capture the broader Diaspora reality: the determination to seize opportunity, rise above challenges, and transform global experiences into platforms for national impact.
